Ancestral Spirit Bookmark

Description

This design features the Tlingit Killer Whale “Kéet” with an Eagle “Cháak” embodied within it. Both animals hold deep cultural significance in Tlingit tradition, representing powerful ancestral connections.

The artwork is created using Formline, the distinctive visual design language of the Tlingit people. Formline is characterized by flowing, curvilinear shapes including ovoids, U-forms, and S-forms that fit together to create balanced, harmonious compositions. This traditional artistic style has been passed down through generations, adapting and evolving while maintaining its cultural foundations.

The integration of Eagle within Killer Whale symbolizes the interconnectedness of Tlingit clan relationships and honors the Eagle moiety, one of the two primary Tlingit social groups alongside Raven.

This bookmark is based on the original “Ancestral Spirit” artwork, which I painted as a 43-foot wide mural on Kevin’s Car Wash in Ferndale, Washington. The public installation brings traditional Tlingit imagery into everyday spaces, creating opportunities for cultural recognition and appreciation within the community.

The backside of the card is titled “Books Read”, followed with 16 spaces to be filled in. The bottom has my information and copyright.
