Boxhead Happy 8×10

Description

This design reinterprets traditional Tlingit bentwood box imagery in a contemporary vertical format. Created using Formline, the distinctive visual language of Tlingit art, “Boxhead Happy” features hands turned inward—symbolizing care and community connection.

Formline is characterized by flowing, organic shapes including ovoids, U-forms, and crescents that interlock to create balanced compositions. This traditional design system has been used by Tlingit artists for countless generations, continually evolving while maintaining its cultural foundations.

The figure incorporates the “Long in the Tooth” element, symbolizing wisdom, while holding a heart that represents love for community—bridging traditional Tlingit artistic expression with contemporary themes of belonging and connection.

This design is a variation of the public art installation of the same name in Ferndale, WA.
