Description

This design depicts the Téel’, known in English as Chum Salmon, a fish of great cultural significance throughout the Pacific Northwest. Created using Formline, the traditional visual design language of the Tlingit people, the salmon features a distinctive Spirit Face within its body—a characteristic element in Tlingit artistic tradition.

Formline is characterized by flowing, organic shapes including ovoids, U-forms, and S-forms that fit together in precise ways to create balanced compositions. This sophisticated design system has been developed over countless generations, serving as both artistic expression and cultural documentation.

The salmon represents the holistic connection between people and nature fundamental to Native cultures of this region, while its bright colors ensure visibility—making Indigenous presence known in public spaces and honoring the deep relationship between Tlingit people and the natural world.

This design is a variation of the public art installation of the same name in Ferndale, WA.
