Long in the Tooth Color 8×10
Long in the Tooth artwork reproduction on premium archival paper, featuring my colored variation of the traditional Tlingit Spirit Face with distinctive elongated teeth and signature questioning eye motif.
Description
This design is my variation on the traditional Tlingit Spirit Face found in Formline art. While maintaining the essential elements of the visual language, this interpretation features distinctive thin, long teeth instead of the traditional chicklet-style teeth, giving the design its name “Long in the Tooth,” signifying an “old” Spirit Face.
Formline is the sophisticated design system developed by Northwest Coast Native peoples, characterized by flowing, organic shapes including ovoids, U-forms, and S-forms that connect in specific ways to create balanced compositions. These elements follow traditional rules of form and space while allowing for artistic innovation.
The design reveals different perspectives: if you cover one side of the face, it appears as a profile of a Formline face, with lips curving up to form nostrils and the bridge of the nose pushing into the mask orbits. One eye contains my signature “questioning eye,” representing the dual perspectives required when navigating both Indigenous identity and life in a colonized society.
The original was part of a collaborative mural installation in Bellingham, WA. This is the color version of Long in the Tooth matching the mural colors.
