Description

This design features an abstract interpretation of a split-beak raven head with wings, painted on a handmade 16-inch elk skin drum. Yéil is the Tlingit word for Raven, a central figure in Tlingit storytelling tradition, often portrayed as a clever trickster and creator.

Formline is the sophisticated visual language of the Tlingit people, characterized by flowing, precisely shaped elements including ovoids, U-forms, and S-forms that connect to create balanced compositions. This design incorporates cross-hatching to hold the negative space together, a technique often used in traditional Formline art.

In the beak area, a tongue transforms into a human face with its tongue extended, representing the act of singing. This transformative element reflects how Tlingit art often depicts beings in states of transformation, honoring the fluid boundaries between human, animal, and spirit worlds. The combination of traditional drum with contemporary design represents how Tlingit culture continues to evolve while staying rooted in ancestral traditions.
