Flukes Vision 8×10
Fluke’s Vision artwork reproduction on premium archival paper, featuring traditional Tlingit Formline elements with my signature ‘questioning eye’ in a contemporary design suggesting a whale’s powerful tail.
Description
This design uses traditional Tlingit colors: bold red and black on a background reminiscent of yellow cedar. At its center is my signature “questioning eye,” surrounded by sweeping curvilinear forms common in traditional Formline design. The overall shape suggests the powerful fluke of a whale breaking the water’s surface.
Formline is the sophisticated visual language developed by Northwest Coast Native peoples, utilizing precisely shaped elements such as ovoids, U-forms, and S-forms that connect according to specific principles. While appearing abstract at first glance, this piece incorporates many elements from traditional Tlingit art in a contemporary composition.
The “questioning eye” motif represents the need to view the world from dual perspectives: as an Indigenous person and as someone living in a contemporary society. Like a whale’s momentary breach, this artwork invites viewers to glimpse Indigenous artistic traditions in unexpected settings.
Flukes Vision originally was painted in Redmond, WA as part of a live art mural project.
